Here's the situation. You want to go work out or practice yoga, but you also want to go join your friends for a beer. Which one do you choose? Well, this is no longer a problem. Thanks to Lori and Patrick, you can do both at the same time. Enter: Downward Drinking Dog.
It's all about community. Lori and Patrick wanted to create an event that would bring people together, and there is no better place for Downward Drinking Dog than here in the bay area. They choose locations based on businesses who make something. Breweries, wineries, coffee roasters, and hotels too! Sometimes the brewmasters come out to join the crowd and talk about their style and philosophy about making beer. They frequent places like Strike in San Jose, Hapas in Willow Glen, Hotel Nia in Menlo Park, and Shanty Shack in Santa Cruz.
There is always music too. Patrick is the house DJ and keeps the energy a bit higher than your traditional vinyasa yoga experience. It's a lot of fun! They do themed events too, like 80s night and singles events.
I recently attended my first one and I was instantly hooked. The location was gorgeous. It was held at the Hotel Nia in Menlo Park, and Devil's Canyon brewery provided the beverages. I got there early to meet Lori and Patrick and some of the other attendees. Everyone there was so friendly! As we laid our mats down I made some instant friends, who I've hung out with since. I knew right away I had to share this experience with my ML Photo family. (that's you!)
I was a little curious as to how you can mix yoga and drinking. Some of the other attendees enjoyed a beer before the practice, but most just hung out and made friends while we waited. Then after a great session, everyone got a beverage and hung out in the landscaped courtyard enjoying the company. The whole experience was refreshing, and I felt so recharged afterward.
Lori and Patrick have 7 certified yoga instructors who lead the sessions. Not all at once, of course! Some of the regular attendees knew the instructor who lead our session and I found out how many of the crowd regularly goes to these events. It's clearly a solid community.
So who is Downward Drinking Dog for? As long as you're at least 21 years of age and you either like beer, being social, or yoga (bonus points for all 3), you will love it. The instructors are all 200YRT certified and the sessions are for all ability levels. They offer more advanced variations throughout the practice if you're so inclined.
The best part for me was the clear sense of community around this event. There were a bunch of regulars there and the other first-timers I spoke to were all brought by their friends. I know I'll see some familiar faces when I go to the next one. And since they're held all over the bay area, from Oakland to Santa Cruz, you don't have to brave Bay Area traffic to get to one.
If you haven't been totally convinced by now, you just need to go and see the magic for yourself.
